Civic Activists Without Active Civil Society Organisations in the Municipality of Debarca

13 Jan 2025

On 19th November 2024, the Mobile Resource Centre visited the Municipality of Debarca. The meeting was attended by civic activists, representatives of the association “Ecotourism” from Ohrid, educational staff from the local school, and representatives of the Municipality of Debarca.

Representatives of “Ecotourism,” an association from Ohrid that actively collaborates with the Municipality of Debarca, highlighted that they have successfully implemented numerous projects in Debarca funded by various donors, focusing on the protection of Belchishko Blato (Sini Viroj), one of the municipality’s most significant landmarks. Representatives of the local self-government shared positive experiences and cooperation with USAID.

The attendees were informed about the work and activities of the Civic Resource Centre and shared their positive experiences in implementing projects so far. They emphasised that their biggest challenge is depopulation, specifically the migration of young people. Although the municipality has allocated an annual budget for civic society organisations, unfortunately, all organisations in this municipality are inactive, with the exception of sports associations, which are still operational. Some of the participants expressed interest in establishing a new association, and this meeting served as motivation for initiation of specific steps and smoother implementation. The Resource Center from Gostivar offered support and guidance for bringing this idea to fruition.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Debarca Museum and the Art Colony, located in the immediate vicinity of the Municipality.
